Who Invented the Fortune Cookie?
Contrary to popular opinion the fortune cookie is not a Chinese invention and does not form part of traditional Chinese cuisine. In fact, the fortune cookie was likely invented in San Francisco by a Japanese-American. The fortune cookies were at first sold at his Japanese restaurant. Some rival restauranteurs in San Francisco’s China town copied the fortune cookie and began giving it out as part of their meals. Soon the fortune cookie had become a fixture of almost all Chinese restaurants.
